Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel

Our room looked out over the bay and Navy ships, and the hotel was handy for our Navy family. With a car, the location worked well: a good restaurant is across the street, the airport is about 15 minutes away, and the boardwalk, Gaslamp District, and Coronado Island are roughly 10-15 minutes away. In-N-Out, Chipotle, and other fast food and dessert spots are less than a two-minute drive away. The rooms were clean and roomy, and there were plenty of coffee choices, including cappuccino, latte, hot chocolate, and espresso. The Christmas decorations were lovely. Staff were friendly and helpful, especially at the front desk. One woman even went out of her way to fix my glasses, which I really appreciated. We had a wonderful five-day stay.

Breakfast at Denny's comes with a 15% discount when you stay here. I also saw some dolphins, lol. Carol 🤩 The room was spotless and comfortable, with everything working just right. Carol at the front desk deserves a special mention. She was so friendly and did extra to make us feel at home. The staff really made the place feel like a home away from home. We loved our stay.

The room itself was okay, but the rest of the stay was rough. We were on the first floor facing the restaurant, where loud music played until 9 PM, so sleeping early wasn't really possible. Our room was also just a few doors from a side entrance used by guests and staff. Every time it opened or closed, it banged loudly and shook the room. I ended up with a migraine. There was a toilet-like smell in the room. One towel looked fresh but had a damp patch in the corner, as if it had been used to wipe the sink and put back instead of replaced. Around midnight I went to the front desk because people were still slamming the side door. I thought it was noisy guests, but it was the staff talking. When I explained what was happening, they didn't try to sort it out and said they couldn't help. Save your money and book somewhere else.

The grounds are secure and really well kept, and the lobby has been renovated and smells nice. I've stayed here at least four times over the years when visiting family in SD. For a Best Western, it beats what I expected. The front desk staff are welcoming, friendly, and helpful. It's a great option for the price, so give it a shot.
