We picked Captain's Stay for its location, within walking distance of New Bern's biggest attractions, and ended up loving the B&B itself most. Mark was a friendly, accommodating host, and the historic house is beautiful, with cozy reading nooks. The walls were thick and soundproof, and our room had a large TV with cable and streaming. Breakfast was part of the experience: you could hear Mark in the kitchen an hour beforehand, making gourmet white chocolate scones, raspberry crepes, and other things guests requested. We asked for extra eggs, pancakes, and avocado toast. It was a great way to start each day. Our one regret is not booking the Master Suite. Next time!

The room on the second floor was spacious and open, with a huge bathroom and a lovely claw-foot tub. Mark was welcoming and an excellent cook. Breakfast came in two courses: fresh fruit and either a homemade scone or crepe, followed by eggs cooked to order, bacon, grits, and toast, with choices for what you wanted. Fresh coffee, juice if you wanted it, water, and tea were there too. We stayed over Memorial Day weekend and parking was free all day, with no trouble finding a spot even during the holiday. The B&B is just steps from Tryon Palace, which we highly recommend touring. Depending on the weather, you can walk a few blocks to restaurants, shops, and bars, or drive. We'd gladly stay again.

For our annual mother-daughter Girls Getaway, we usually pick somewhere new. This time we agreed we want to return to the same place next year, largely because of our wonderful weekend at Captain's Stay. Craig's cooking was the standout. His breakfasts felt like a five-star restaurant, and nobody's going hungry on his watch. The new owners, Craig and Denise, made us feel at home from the start, knew the town well, and gave us helpful recommendations and directions. The house had thoughtful touches that made it cozy and comfortable. The beds were great, the rooms spacious, and there were plenty of little nooks for reading or chatting. The front porch swing was my favorite. We left hugging Craig and Denise, feeling like we'd spent the weekend with friends. Can't wait to go back!

Craig was happy to have our dogs stay with us, and we'll definitely plan to return. The Cottage was comfortable, and the owner was fantastic and a wonderful cook. It was my wife and daughter's first B&B, and Craig made it a great experience.

We visited in April, and the hosts were so charming and welcoming that we felt at home. Breakfast was five-star: homemade sourdough bread, bacon and eggs, and a lovely surprise of his crepe with fresh berries and yogurt. I'd love the sourdough recipe, by the way! We loved being close to the palace and highly recommend the trolley tour. New Bern, and especially Captains Stay B & B, will see us again.
