Magazine Street turned out to be one of my favorite parts of the city. It’s quieter than the tourist areas but still has plenty going on, and Bourbon Street is only about a 10-minute ride away. The hostel itself has a really social, homey feel. The shared spaces aren’t huge, but people gather there and it works well. The staff are awesome, and the owner is super friendly. Rooms are nice and roomy enough, though the beds could be more comfortable. Still, I had such a good time here that it’s an easy five stars for me.

The kitchen was spotless and roomy enough to cook whatever you’re in the mood for. I also found the room and shared areas comfortable and welcoming. Everyone on staff was unbelievably kind and accommodating. The Garden District is just a couple of blocks away, with cool little bars and cafes plus some really nice restaurants. A classic, classy hostel, and great value in a great location.

For the price, it was more than enough for my one night. I arrived around 10 pm and was gone before 9 the next morning. I had a private bedroom and bathroom, which I appreciated, but it wasn’t especially clean and things looked a bit worn. It’s a hostel, not a hotel, and people share sleeping spaces, which aren’t always separate bedrooms. There weren’t any towels, so bring one or expect to pay extra. They also wanted a $5 cash deposit for the key, refundable later. I hadn’t expected that, and there’s no ATM, so they ended up taking my credit card instead. The room’s AC wasn’t working, but since it was fall, I didn’t need it. Breakfast was pancakes with syrup and coffee, and I had to wash my own dishes. The staff were cordial and friendly, the street was quiet, and the other guests were nice. It was close to downtown, where I needed to go, and to the French Quarter.

We stayed in two rooms during our visit, and both were cozy and clean. The location was just right, with plenty to do nearby, including options and happy hour times listed on a board. Public transit is close too. The whole staff made us feel welcome, they’re some of the nicest people you’ll meet. We can’t wait to come back!

I’d been avoiding this place on my regular trips to NOLA after a visit two years ago, when it felt sketchy, more like a shelter than a hostel, and plumbing problems left the bathroom floors wet. I decided to give it another look, and it’s changed a lot for the better. Now it feels clean, small, homey, authentic, and not like a party spot. Prices are good too. They vary with availability and holidays or events, but I’ve seen them as low as $12 a night.
