Microtel Inn & Suites New Ulm

It was a great place to stop on a road trip. The property felt safe, was quiet at night, and had good lighting. Check-in was easy, and the front desk person shared some awesome local recommendations. The staff made me feel very welcome. Highly recommend!

This was by far the worst stay I've ever had. I wish there were negative stars. There were poop stains on the beds and dirty underwear in the room. My friend was charged three times for a weekend stay. The keys stopped working, leaving us locked out in the lobby for four hours. My daughter had an asthma attack because of mold in the pool room, and her inhaler was inside our room. We couldn't get to it because their key system failed and no replacement key could be found for four hours. Staff re-keyed their master key, but we didn't get back into our room until after 1 a.m. I had to be up at 6 for a hockey game, since we were there for a tournament. Other people were stuck in the lobby too because of the key problems. Before that, some guests had to change rooms over damage or other issues. We ended up putting up with a broken toilet because we'd had enough and were too tired to keep looking for somewhere to sleep. I do not recommend this place to anyone. It should just be demolished. Stay at your own risk, but you'd be better off finding another hotel or an Air BNB. Don't waste your time.

The bed was reasonably comfortable and the sheets were clean. That's about all I can say for the stay. I'd called months ahead to check whether the pool would be open and was told it would be, but it was still "under maintenance" when I arrived, and apparently had been for months. The meeting room was unavailable for the same reason. The room was tiny, and the bathroom paint clearly hadn't covered the mold. The heating and cooling unit did nothing to fix the stuffy heat, even set to 66°. Breakfast was the only food provided, and it was awful: stale cereal, expired milk and yogurt, moldy bagels, and coffee that tasted like old grounds. This is a health code concern. There were only two tiny, thin towels for a room meant for four guests. With the pool promise, poor maintenance, and unhygienic food, the whole stay was stressful. That decent bed doesn't make up for all the serious problems. Save your money and look elsewhere.

We were there for a hockey tournament. The rooms were tiny, but we could have lived with that. The bigger problem was the key system: on Friday night, many of us across the whole second and third floors were locked out for over six hours. It happened again Saturday, though that time it lasted only 30 minutes. The lobby garbage bins overflowed, and I don't think they were emptied all weekend. The pool area was disgusting, smelled horrible, and had condensation dripping from the ceiling. There was clearly growing mold, probably because of poor ventilation. I attached photos of the pool area. I asked about a discount for being locked out Friday night. The man working said maybe 20% once the owner returned to the US on Tuesday.
