East Harlem Hostel

We found it easy to get into the city center by subway, and the location worked really well for our four-night stay at East Harlem Hostel. The rooms are simple but had everything we needed for a city trip. Staff were quick to respond and helpful. Our street-facing room got a little loud, so earplugs would be useful.

The subway is close, though getting back late at night took longer. People were around at all hours, but I was never bothered; they either kept to themselves or were friendly, and as a woman I felt safe. My private room and bathroom on the third floor were very clean. Just be aware the stairs are narrow and steep, so ask for a lower floor if climbing is difficult.

The subway is just around the corner, and Central Park is within walking distance. There are also some good South American restaurants and coffee shops nearby. I know Harlem has a bad reputation, but I felt safer here than in some European cities. The facilities are basic, though comfortable enough, and the staff responded quickly when I once forgot the code to my room and got stuck outside.

For what I paid, I was happy with the place. It was clean, and I had no trouble with the door or room codes or any safety concerns. There were three locks to get through, at the front entrance, the common room, and the bedroom, which I appreciated. The location is just off the 6 at Lex and 116.
