Hotel 31

This is an old building and not a typical modern hotel, so expect the rooms to feel tight and cramped. It won’t suit a family, a large group, or anyone needing accessible accommodations. But for a solo traveler or a couple trying to spend less than they would at the usual chains, I’d recommend it. I honestly loved my stay.

Getting here from LaGuardia was simple after a long flight: one bus, then the subway, with the station about a block and a half away. The hotel’s central Manhattan location also made it easy to walk around or hop on the subway to Brooklyn without spending much on transport. I stayed last August with three other people. Our room had two double beds and a shared bathroom, and there was plenty of space for four. The hotel supplied basic shampoo and conditioner, and we had a mini fridge for food and drinks plus a safe that worked perfectly. There’s no kitchen. The place is old-fashioned but well kept and clean. They cleaned our room every morning and replaced the sheets and towels. Staff were friendly from the start, check-in was smooth, and we had no problems during the stay. For New York, I didn’t think the price was high given the location. It’s a simple, clean option with kind staff, and I’d definitely stay here again.

This hotel does the job, even if it’s no Ritz Carlton. Check-in was easy, housekeeping was up bright and early, and our room was clean and comfortable, with decent outlet placement, clean bathroom, and comfortable beds. It’s an old building, so the hallways are narrow, rooms are close together, and the elevator is basically a tiny pantry with a gate and door you open yourself. It fits no more than four people without luggage. Space is tight, and you may have to sit at a novel angle on the toilet, but you probably didn’t come to NYC to stay in your room. There’s a raised step into the bathroom, and I smashed my big toe on it. That’s on me, big oaf.

For such a low price, this is really good value. The building’s old, but the rooms are comfortable, spacious enough, and a bit charming. The location is great too, and the front desk staff were all friendly and helpful. What more could you ask for?
