Midtown West Hotel

The way the hotel treated our complaint was frustrating. I explained that the room wasn’t as advertised, but we were ignored and they refused a refund. They couldn’t offer another room either because there’s no elevator, someone in our party had mobility issues, and they only had two or three rooms on the first floor with nothing else available. Apparently, they lock you in at night for safety reasons. Given all the graffiti on the side of the building, that should have been expected. The room and the rest of the hotel were dirty and run-down. There were stains all over the curtains, hair in the bed and shower, dirty linens on both beds, and an outlet hanging out of the wall beside the sheets at the head of the bed. The entrance, furniture, and halls were dirty too. I’d rate it lower if I could.

The location is great and central, and there’s a bodega with a cute cat right next door. Our room was clean, and the staff were friendly and helpful. They even let us leave our luggage after checkout. It’s a small, loud budget hotel on a busy New York City street, so the thin walls and noise were expected. There’s no elevator, and the heat was turned up too high with no way to adjust it. The bed was okay, but the pillows were pretty bad. I’d stay again if I were on a budget, though I’d have some hesitation.

The rooms were quite nice, and the central location made it easy to get around. Service was alright and didn’t get in the way of a pleasant stay. Midtown West Hotel is a decent NYC option, especially for its rooms and handy spot.

We were treated kindly, and they eventually sorted out most of the problems, but the long wait soured things. Our room still wasn't ready hours after check-in, even though we were meant to get in early. We had to haul our bags up steep stairs to the third floor, making two trips with heavy luggage. The air conditioner rattled through the night. I'm still not sure we'd stay again.
