My husband and I had a hard time arranging flowers for my 40th birthday. Staff initially refused, then finally accepted the delivery, nearly turned it away, and left it in the room still boxed with a sticky note covering the card. Nobody acknowledged the milestone. I was disappointed I chose Romer Hotel for my birthday. I’d raised my budget because the “deluxe” king corner room sounded special, but it was dark and dingy. Service was extremely unfriendly except for one slender doorman with glasses. Usually nobody greeted us at the entrance, even when I made eye contact or said hello. Early check-in would have cost another $55-$75. Housekeeping did the bare minimum, not refreshing the bathroom or paper cups. After our takeout arrived without utensils, nobody could or would bring us any, pretty crazy for a supposed 4-star hotel. The colorful robes shown in the promotional photos were missing, and our deluxe corner king layout was very different from the pictures. The room had just one vent for AC, and the bathroom had no ventilation. There were moldy spots and bubbling paint, and it took a day for the AC to start working. I’d chosen a larger room, but the bathroom was ridiculously small. There was no coffee maker, and my nightstand and lamp never worked. The tangle of wires was unpleasant to look at. I wouldn’t stay again. It feels awful to try to treat yourself and have it fall so flat. I like boutique hotels, but this one missed the mark. I’d have been just as happy at a Holiday Inn for two-thirds the price.

The excellent location is easily the hotel’s biggest plus. The room was fairly spacious, but the bathroom was extremely small, and the property felt more like a 3-star hotel overall. The windows were unbelievably dirty, almost as if they were tinted. The AC barely worked and seemed more like basic ventilation. The room never cooled below 23°C / 74°F, making it quite uncomfortable to sleep at night.

The location was hard to beat for the holiday rate we found. We were a family of four with luggage and had plenty of room, plus theaters were only minutes away and Times Square and Rockefeller Center were a few blocks off. The beds were comfortable and the staff helpful. We only found coffee and lattes for food options, but both were delicious. We booked after seeing strong reviews and would happily stay again.

The adjoining rooms gave us and the kids enough space, and everything was clean with modern decor. Staff were friendly, and the simple breakfast was great. I did wish coffee were available later, though it was easy to pick some up nearby. Hell's Kitchen felt central while still having a neighborhood feel. The subway at 50th Street made it handy to reach Court Sq. and then Greenpoint, about 20 minutes away, as well as Central Park, MoMA, and downtown. We'd recommend it and come back.

We had a lovely honeymoon stay. The staff were so friendly and, when the heat wave coincided with an AC outage, they were accommodating and ultimately made things right. The room and building did get uncomfortably warm for a while. Our room was clean and spacious, and the price is fair if you catch a good rate. There's good food nearby, the subway is right across the street, and Times Square is walkable if that's what you're after. We'd gladly return and recommend the place.
