The place was decent overall. My Booking.com confirmation had the wrong address, and it pointed to a homeless shelter. Thankfully Google Maps showed me the correct one. The neighborhood has what some people call “character,” but I didn't want to explore, so I was glad taxis were available. The building seemed clean and modern, and my room was spotless: no bugs, odd smells, stains, marks, or stray hairs. I heard the train beside the building, but it was muffled by the structure. I was charged exactly what Booking.com quoted, with no hidden fees. There was a lot of loud street talk and hollering, though it was New Year's Eve and people should be able to celebrate. The front desk service was adequate, and the man there was nice. He had a heavy accent, but I could understand him. I lost my wallet and asked two housekeepers and the receptionist about it, but it hadn't been turned in. If you're looking for a reasonably priced hotel, this one is sufficient. I spent NYE in Brooklyn, NY on my own, trying to get out there, and despite what I'd read in reviews, I had no real problems. I am very observant, and the area didn't make me feel eager to wander.
For a solo stay, it was good and one of the cheapest options I found in New York. I arrived minutes before midnight, and the front desk was happy to check me in. Breakfast came in a simple bag with muffins, yogurt, fruit, and bars. It was enough to fill me up. A diner about a two-minute walk away had good food and prices. I got a medium pizza for around $10 including tip. The subway was about five minutes away on foot, which was handy. Some guests on my floor were loud and frustrating, though that wasn't the hotel's fault, and the train nearby ran all night. I got used to the sound fairly quickly. This is in a Brooklyn neighborhood, not an Instagram-ready spot. People live and work here, so it's unfair to judge the neighborhood. I've read reviews calling it unsafe or “sketchy.” It didn't seem especially safe at first glance, but people were friendly and helpful, and I had no problems as a woman traveling alone. There were a few convenience stores nearby. I didn't smell the bad odors others mention. There's a McDonald's down the road, but don't go there unless you want a horrible experience, and definitely don't use its bathroom. That's nothing to do with the hotel. The price was among the best I saw on my trip, and you get what you pay for.
I booked this last minute to visit a sick loved one nearby, so I had few hotel options. For $600 for two nights, it was definitely overpriced. The smell of marijuana hit my nose as soon as I entered the hallway. The walls were visibly scuffed and dirty, and I wasn't sure the sheets were clean. The bathroom, surprisingly, was clean, and there was a fridge, though I didn't need it. The train passed right outside my window what felt like every 1-2 hours, leaving me with two mostly sleepless nights. I wouldn't stay here again. I'd rather reschedule the trip altogether.
The noise made this stay miserable. Trains thundered past my room every ten minutes all night, and people in the hall were shouting and slamming doors too. The bed was broken, the walls were filthy, and even the hallway smelled damp and musty as soon as I walked in. Housekeeping only swapped the towels and left everything else untouched. I travel often, and this was one of the worst hotels I've stayed in. I wish I could give it zero stars. Avoid it.
Getting here from JFK was easy since the hotel is right by the J, and it was convenient for getting into the city too. The staff were kind and helpful. I thought there was a problem with a charge, but they patiently explained that I'd misunderstood it. I really appreciated how they handled it, and I'd happily stay here again.
