The front desk woman was awesome, and that's the only reason I'm giving two stars. After our flight was canceled, we booked a room after a full day of travel and waited for the advertised free airport shuttle. It never came. We called four times and got no answer, then had to pay for a cab. We later learned the shuttle only runs from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. That should have been stated on the website, or someone should have answered the phone. The rooms were dirty, and maintenance was poor. In the first room the AC only blew warm air, and its outlet was pulling out of the wall. The carpets hadn't been vacuumed, and the toilet and shower hadn't been properly wiped down. We asked to move because of the AC, but the next room was just as dirty, even though its AC worked better. Both the rooms and common areas smelled. Cleanliness is my biggest issue. It's gross any time, and during an ongoing pandemic it felt downright wrong.
The shuttle runs every half hour, 24/7, and is prompt most of the time. The staff were courteous, helpful, and efficient. I know the hotel is being renovated, and I appreciate the effort to improve it. My room was clean, though the shampoo and conditioner containers had already been used and only had about a quarter left.
The room had recently been updated and was very comfortable, and the bathroom was in good shape apart from a shower that seemed dirty. We still got a pretty good night's sleep, and the shuttle got us where we needed to go. But I wouldn't recommend this property. The staff seemed aloof, and there are plenty of other airport hotels nearby that are probably better. The lobby ceiling was bowed and looked ready to collapse, with a heavy leak near registration. They'd put out a large trash can and had a mop ready, but with a baby along and no other option, I stayed and checked in. Because of construction, the lobby restaurant was shut, so getting dinner was difficult. Another guest complained to management, who seemed surprisingly unsympathetic and suggested taking the airport shuttle back to the airport for food. On the way to our room, we heard people arguing with staff and smelled cigarette smoke despite the no-smoking signs. Later, while I was feeding the baby, housekeeping let herself into our room to bring towels. That was very inappropriate, especially since we checked in after 5 p.m. and the towels should already have been there.
The room was fine and clean, though a little worn, like the hotel overall. The bed was large and comfortable, the toilet and bathroom were clean, and we slept without being disturbed by noise. The airport transfer was convenient and took about six minutes, though the ride was rough. The shuttle runs every 30 minutes, 24/7, but ours left five minutes before its scheduled time. We arrived at Newark airport late and chose the hotel for its affordable price and the breakfast listed on our booking site. At around midnight, some frustrated customers were trying to sort out check-in problems at the counter, apparently due to a booking system mistake or staff error. It took us about 15 minutes to get our keys, which was disappointing when we were exhausted and just wanted to sleep. The restaurant was closed for renovations, so there was no breakfast. I understand the construction, but some hot tea or a small snack in the lobby would have been nice. Our room was clean, though there were stains on the bath and bathroom door. The lamps were unplugged, so at first we couldn't work out why the lights wouldn't come on. There was no drinking water, and we weren't sure if the tap water was safe to drink. We didn't mind too much since all we wanted was sleep. The hotel is old and shows wear throughout, especially in the common areas: stained carpets, faded paint on furniture, old elevators, and a faint cigarette smell in parts of the corridor. I assume that's why renovations are happening. Oddly, the rooms under renovation weren't screened off from guests, which gave the place a bit of an abandoned feel. It didn't bother us much. The stay was positive overall, and I'd recommend it mainly for the budget price, though I think the service could be better.
We left our car and paid for long-term parking, then took the shuttle to the airport without much trouble. On our return, we never got picked up. We called after landing and clearing customs around 2:45, and were told a shuttle would leave the hotel at 3 and reach the airport pickup point by 3:10. At 3:45 there was still no shuttle. We tried calling several times, but no one answered, including the general manager. Another hotel's shuttle kindly took us back. When we got to Wyndham, several women were at the front desk, so they could easily have answered one of the many calls, but didn't. We complained about the lack of service and got attitude and disrespect, without even an apology. Completely unacceptable. We won't use Wyndham hotels for any service or stay again, and we'll tell everyone the same story.
