Holiday Inn Express Newell-Chester WV

The bed was comfortable, the sheets and towels looked clean, and the staff besides the person who checked me in were friendly. But the property felt run-down. My socks turned black from the room floor, the lobby and outside entrance were filthy, and four coffee creamers curdled when I tried them. The check-in person wasn’t very friendly either. The pool was closed for repairs. I’d call it a three-star motel.

We’ve stayed here several times over the years while visiting the area for the Fiesta tent sale. The rooms used to be comfortable and usually clean, and although the facilities felt tired, a refresh helped for a while. Staff have always been wonderful, and earlier cleanliness problems were fixed quickly. This stay was different, and we won’t be back. It’s sad to see the place go from decent to this. The room carpet was stained and felt almost sticky underfoot. There were stains on the bed linens, the shower curtain smelled strongly of mildew, the bathroom grout was gross, and some tiles were loose. The worst part was the large stink bugs. We first saw one, then two more the next day. When we told staff, they offered to move us but couldn’t promise another room would be bug-free because the bugs were apparently “everywhere” around here. Since it was our last day, moving all our family’s things would have been a lot of work, and there was no assurance the new room would be better. Today there are several bugs in the room, on the ceiling and in the curtains, and one even got into one of our bags.

Update 10/4/25: After years of good visits, our last two stays have been disappointing. The hotel already seemed tired in June, though it was otherwise clean, and this trip it felt like things had slipped further. The carpet was stained and almost sticky underfoot. The bathroom grout was disgusting, and the tiles were cracked. The shower curtain reeked of mildew when we checked in, though it was replaced. The linens still had stains after laundering. Then there were stink bugs in the room, one on the first day and several more later. Staff offered to move us when we reported them, but couldn’t guarantee a bug-free room since the bugs were apparently “everywhere” right now. We won’t stay here again. On earlier visits, we found the location convenient for the Fiesta Factory Outlet, and the rooms were spacious and comfortable. During one stay, there were large crumbs around the microwave and refrigerator unit, and the refrigerator hadn’t been cleaned. The front desk dealt with it quickly after we let them know, and nothing else went wrong that visit. Staff were friendly and helpful. It was our fourth stay, and the breakfast wasn’t as good as on previous trips. That was our only complaint then.

There’s hardly anything around, so we had to take what we could get. But the room was dingy and gross, and we killed at least three huge bugs that looked like roaches. The breakfast wasn’t great, but I could’ve dealt with that. The bugs were disgusting. Never again. After I contacted the hotel, they basically said they’d check the rooms and left it at that. No apology or offer of restitution. I honestly didn’t expect restitution, but it would’ve been nice to have them offer.
