Motel 6 Newport, RI

We planned to stay another night, but left the next day. Even our keys stopped working, and we spent an hour trying to find an employee before calling corporate, who couldn’t reach anyone either. As we drove off, my husband tried the front desk once more. The woman there was insanely rude when he asked for a receipt and a refund for the day we weren’t staying; she said they didn’t do that. He filmed the conversation in case they tried to scam us. She claimed she’d been there all morning, but when he showed her his video of the empty desk, she just stared without responding. She also said the phone numbers he and corporate had were both wrong, but wouldn’t give us the right one. I don’t know if we’ll get our refund. I’m just glad to be out of that hellhole. The room was awful too: it smelled of weed and cigarettes, the walls were sticky, doors had holes, and there was feces still in the toilet. A dog belonging to someone staying there tried to attack me twice and barked all night. The TV looked like it had a bullet hole, and there was a strange beeping sound somewhere in the room. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were hidden cameras. Half the rooms seemed abandoned or occupied by people living there full time, and the front desk just shrugged when we brought it up.

There’s a base across the street, a couple of breweries within a mile, and the motel sits on a well-traveled road. If all you need is a bed while traveling, it covers the bare minimum. The rooms were clean, but the workmanship looked poor and worn from years of use. The lobby smelled strongly of weed, and the rest of the building had weed and cigarette odors. My room reeked of cigarettes. I don’t blame the staff for that, it’s the guests who have no respect. The air conditioner barely cooled the room. The shower was janky, though I got it working without calling maintenance, and at least the hot water was good. The mirrors were covered in arm smudges. The door’s bar lock looked like it had been kicked in a few times and was loose, but I tested it and it still worked. The walls are thin enough that you hear everything. This wasn’t like the other Motel 6s I’ve stayed at; it felt like a stereotype.

For the price, the value is hard to beat. The property was well maintained, parking was easy, and the front desk staff were polite and helpful. Check-in was quick and stress-free.

When we arrived, the host called the cleaning company to check whether the room was ready. But once we checked in, it was dirty and smelled strongly of cigarettes and weed. The host said we could leave if we didn’t like it and was very unprofessional. I believe this place is dangerous to health and safety. I’ll submit all the deleted reports to the authorities to try to get it shut down.
