We visited during Jazz Festival weekend and plan to return when we’re back next year. Phil, the proprietor, was available for questions and even provided chairs for the festival. It’s a little off the beaten track, but Newport is small, so the more active parts of town are only a short walk away. Free parking is a real plus. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and breakfast was freshly prepared each day, with generous portions that got us started. Muffins, fruit, and other snacks were fresh and available throughout the day.

Why stay in a characterless hotel when you’re visiting an historic area? Spring Street Inn has the feel of early East Coast history. A block from the shore, you can wake up to the smell of a homemade six-course breakfast. When you arrive, the charming, caring caretaker welcomes you with homemade chocolate chip cookies and lemonade, then shares guides and a presentation about all kinds of things to do around Newport. You get the area’s charm and atmosphere right at your feet.

Pat is what makes Spring Street Inn so welcoming and memorable. She’s full of character, helpful, and knows the area well. There are homemade cookies every afternoon and a nice breakfast each morning. I’m thinking about going back just to stay here again. Compared with Pat’s hospitality, any other hotel or inn would be a disappointment. If you’re staying in Newport, you must stay here.
