Travelodge Newport

For a cheap room for one night, it was good value, which is why I’m giving it five stars. The bed was king-sized and comfortable enough, and the heater worked well. There was also a microwave and fridge, though we hadn’t seen those advertised, plus granola bars and bananas in the morning. Breakfast wasn’t advertised either, so those were a nice surprise. The person who checked us in was sweet and amazing. He offered to bring extra bedding, blankets, or pillows right away if we asked, and asked whether we’d prefer a ground-floor room with people on either side or an upper-floor room without anyone next to us. I appreciated having the choice. One suggestion: roll up a towel to put in front of the shower, or the whole bathroom can flood. They seem to have made the shower a little more spacious, but the curtain doesn’t keep the water in. I added a picture. This didn’t change my rating because the room was so inexpensive.

The manager was pleasant, but nothing ever got followed through. I spent two weeks asking about an item I’d left in the room and was repeatedly told it would be mailed the next day. I offered several times to help however I could and was told not to worry. It still hasn’t been sent.

The beds were comfortable, and the rooms were decent. Even though the place is on the main road, nights were quiet and peaceful. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance, and the owner-host knows a lot about the community and its festivals. We loved staying here.

I rarely post reviews, but people should know how this place is being run. The worker on duty seemed to be handling the whole property alone. He was clearly overwhelmed by constant interruptions and calls, but stayed polite and kept trying to help guests. The problem seemed to be a lack of staff and support, not his attitude. Room readiness was delayed because there was only one housekeeper. The staff looked critically short-handed, and it was uncomfortable to watch the pressure fall on whoever remained. At one point, it seemed employees were expected to stay available around the clock just to keep things going. There doesn’t appear to be enough staff or a solid management structure to support guests or employees. I feel bad for the worker. Ownership needs to seriously rethink how this property is operated.
