The food at The Harvest Bed and Breakfast was a standout, including Cindy's special gluten-free scones and muffins, which she made from her own recipes for my allergy. They were some of the best baked goods I can remember, gluten-free or otherwise. Breakfast had two choices each day, with a different menu on the second morning. The farm-fresh ingredients were excellent, especially the flavorful fruit. There were gluten-free blueberry pancakes and toast, along with sausage, a hash brown skillet, waffles, eggs, yogurt parfait, and more. Everything we had was delicious, and coffee was available all day. Cindy and Ron clearly make a great team in the kitchen as well as being wonderful hosts. We felt welcomed like family. Cindy and Ron invited all the guests to share wine and hors d'oeuvres on their back porch Saturday night, which was a lovely chance to get to know them. Their hospitality made us feel at home, and it was almost hard not to help clean up after meals or make breakfast. They also offer a generous discount to veterans, which we appreciated. The property itself was immaculate, with a manicured lawn, lovely landscaping, mature trees, and a peaceful swing out back. The building is distinctive and tastefully decorated, and each bedroom has its own character. We chose the lodge suite, which has items collected on the owners' travels to the American northwest and Canada. Windows on every side let in a nice breeze, the front porch was a great spot to sit with wine and take in the property, and the bathroom was surprisingly spacious. We hadn't expected much availability when we planned an impromptu Labor Day weekend near the Southern Michigan “wine trail” just two weeks before the holiday. The options near Lake Michigan were all booked, but that led us inland to Niles, where The Harvest had room. We were glad we ended up there. Wineries on our list were 20-30 minutes away, and good dinner options in South Bend were less than ten minutes in the other direction. It was our first B&B stay, and it exceeded our expectations. The place, the hosts, and the food made for a thoroughly satisfying visit. Cindy and Ron, thanks. We'll be seeing you again soon.
