The mandatory valet setup was the worst part. There’s a large lot, but you have no choice except valet, which costs $22 cash. The line only fits three cars, so everyone else queues up on a one-lane street. It made parking slow and really inconvenient. We were there on a sold-out night when a show was on next door at the Criterion. I asked the front desk to send silverware up, but the employee said he was the only one on duty. I went down and got it myself, but having just one person working that night seemed absurd. The hotel is dated but clean, the rooms are as advertised, and the location is great, just off the interstate by an entertainment district. Some details were off: the ice machine on our floor didn’t work, though the one two floors up did, and the “Marriott” channel was out. The room was stuffy and warm even with the heat off in January. Breakfast was fine, but basic.

The rooms are decent, though the hallways and elevator area could use work. Whether I’d recommend it depends on what brings you to the city. Lifetime members should know that late checkout isn’t always honored. If the hotel is sold out, they may not tell you and can make you leave early.

The manager was rude and laughed at my questions as if they were a joke. Someone was charged 978 for three nights, which I couldn’t believe. When I asked to speak with someone above him, he refused. I’ll try to reach someone else, but I won’t stay here again. I’ve never been treated this badly at another hotel. Please stay somewhere else.

Three of the four reading lights by the headboard were burned out when we checked in, and there weren’t any ceiling lights above the bed. We reported it right away. The front desk said maintenance would come in the morning, then promised again for the following morning, and then for our last day. We were out most of the day each time, but nothing changed. Now I understand why those bulbs were out: there’s a lot of talk about fixing things here, but no follow-through. They seem annoyed when guests ask for proper service. We stayed three nights this past weekend, and there are too many other hotels nearby to put up with this.

The rooms were acceptable and the breakfast was average, but the service and management were disappointing. At check-in, the young man at the desk talked at length about his personal life and being out until 3 a.m. He didn’t give us breakfast times or other hotel information. The bar was closed Friday and Saturday. When I asked Friday, he said the bartender had “no called, no showed.” I didn’t bother asking Saturday. Parking is valet only, for a fee. On Saturday evening, after our softball tournament, eight or nine cars were backed up, with some parked along a street that isn’t meant for parking. The valet attendant was clearly working hard, but the hotel should consider a second person on weekend nights. Meanwhile, the same desk employee was outside eating a pint of ice cream and watching the mess. I wouldn’t stay here again. It feels poorly managed and doesn’t meet the service level I expect from Marriott.
