Super 8 By Wyndham Olney

The room was clean, but it smelled awful, sort of musty and maybe smoky. The tissue stuffed in the peephole was especially unsettling for me as a woman traveling alone. I felt pretty unsafe. It felt run down, though I know it’s a Super 8 in a small town. I got in very late, so I just dealt with things. The thermostat didn’t seem to work, and the unit blew cool air all night while the room stayed warm. The fridge was off too. I turned it on and put my food in, hoping for the best.

The room smelled strongly of cigarette smoke, the mattress was long overdue for replacement, and the decor was very dated. The toilet wasn’t secured well to the floor, the shower head was lying on the floor, and there was no body wash. I told the manager, but he didn’t seem to care what I thought. At least the towels and sheets were clean, and the entrance and hallway smelled fresh. I probably won’t stay at another Super 8 anywhere.

The vending machine was nearly empty, and a woman was throwing up in the stairwell at 4 pm. The owners also took the best parking spots with their BMW, making check-in and unloading harder. I’d booked a crib through the app with my reservation, but was told it didn’t show up because I’d booked through a third party. Then they said the crib was broken. The remodel looked like a DIY job by someone who hadn’t watched any how-to videos.

The room was spotless, and the clerk was very nice. Since my last stay, they’ve replaced the somewhat nasty carpet with wood-look vinyl flooring, which makes the room feel fresh and clean. This Super 8 is much better than the other Super 8s I’ve stayed at.
