Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham Overland Park

We had a peaceful birthday and first anniversary getaway this weekend. The rooms were spacious, very clean, and lovely, and the beds were even more comfortable than my own. Staff were lovely too. Breakfast was delicious, with several choices, and unlike what I've had at other hotels.

Our suite had a full kitchen, bedroom, living room, dining area, and a huge spa tub. There weren't enough towels for four guests, but staff brought more whenever we asked. We chose to clean up after ourselves even though daily maid service was available, and I didn't try the included breakfast. The pool looked murky gray when I saw it, though it was only a few hours after a storm, so perhaps it isn't usually that way. The refrigerator was my main frustration. I reported it on our first night of five, but nobody addressed it. The freezer kept thawing to 38° and freezing again, while the fridge cycled from room temperature to cold.

The gentleman at the desk was kind and helpful, and the outside of the property looks nice. Still, I wouldn't recommend staying here until the rooms get a thorough cleaning and more attention. Mine had dirt and stains on the walls, floors, sheets, and pillowcases, plus an odd smell. People were walking around the property at midnight when we arrived and standing in the parking lot. It was passable for one quick overnight while traveling through, but I wouldn't stay longer. The online photos look nothing like the actual rooms; maybe they're from years ago, or maybe the place has become dated. It seems like it could have potential with a deep clean. I called about rates and was quoted $90+ a night, but found it online for $60.

I'm sorry, but this is the lowest rating I've ever given a hotel, and I won't stay here again. It was kind of the property to make rooms available for the 40 plus people at our family gathering, but the place was terribly understaffed. The desk never had more than one person, even when busy, the public spaces and bathrooms were nowhere near standard, the carpets were worn, and nearly all the furniture needed replacing. It looked like the hotel had seen better days about 20 years ago. I met several nice employees, but they needed to be working somewhere else. I don't know if the place will ever improve.
