Inverness 509 has direct beach access and ocean-view rooms, and the balcony was a good size for sitting outside when it was too windy to be down on the beach. Those were the main upsides. The rest of the property looked worn, grungy, and poorly maintained. On our first night, I found two roaches crawling in the cooking utensil drawer. I had to hand-wash everything we used, then dried the dishes with paper towels all week because I didn’t trust the dish towels from those drawers. That soured me on the room, and I’ve now labeled Inverness “Roach Motel” in my map notes. The beds were so high they needed stairs to climb onto, higher than Willie Nelson. Of the balcony door locks, only one worked, and so much fogging and debris was trapped between the glass panes that we couldn’t see outside. We didn’t discover the second bathroom until the morning of day two, when my wife noticed its door behind the mostly closed bedroom door. The elevators were unreliable, though there are two, since the one on our end was often out. The security fob was meant for the parking garage and beach gates, but all but one door was inoperable. The sturdy balcony railing may meet safety code, but it blocked much of the beach view. Glass panels would help, though given the condition of the place, I doubt they’re in the budget.
