Red Rock Motel

The kitchen was a bright spot, with an induction stove, big fridge, and sink. The rest wasn't clean: there was dust everywhere, two cockroaches, and a spider. The mattress sagged and was really uncomfortable, while the loud AC blew right at the bed with no way to adjust it. Checkout was another problem. Charging $25 for an extra half hour or $35 for an hour, plus a $50 penalty, is outrageous. Mainly because of the hygiene, I'll stay somewhere else next time I'm in Page.

Of all the places I stayed on my three-week trip, this was the best. Loved how quiet it was and the atmosphere. Great!

Our host was easy to reach, and check-in was quick. The studio was small but clean, with everything we needed and a roomy shower. One thing for the owner to consider: east-facing rooms get bright and warm from the early sun, so blackout curtains might help. Highly recommend.

After driving more than 11 hours from West Yellowstone, we were exhausted. The receptionist seemed angry that we didn't know how to check in to the apartment on Elm, and it took real effort to get directions. Apparently she'd sent a message and expected us to know what to do. At Elm there was no reception, just a scruffy building with locked doors, so we had to go back to the motel for help. She mocked how tired we were. I was furious because we'd booked direct, not through booking.com, so there was no way they'd sent us a message there as she claimed. We eventually got an apology, but it sounded like a sulky teenager's. Her unprofessional presentation didn't help, and a front desk worker wearing a sweatshirt that said it was their can't-be-bothered day is unacceptable. The check-in instructions did eventually arrive by email, hours after we got there. Red Rock should train reception staff to understand emails can be delayed and that customers shouldn't be treated like dirt. The apartment was disappointing too. It's on the ground floor, and we had to keep the curtains shut because there were no blinds. The outside area was scruffy, with used cigarette ends in the sandpit. Showers in both rooms dripped all night, so we put face cloths in the trays to quiet them. The AC was very loud from vibration in a badly mounted outdoor unit, which oddly discharged into a plant pot. The fan above our bed had a smashed hole in its glass cover. Coffee came in a huge catering tub that anyone could have put dirty fingers in, and the kitchen floor felt gritty under my bare feet. There was no deadbolt or safe, so the unit felt insecure. The rooms were very roomy, though, with good shower pressure and plenty of hot water. The worst problem after the receptionist was how much noise came through from upstairs. Every footstep was audible, even the guests' mobile phones vibrating. Page itself was gorgeous. If I came back, I'd pick somewhere toward the river with a view instead of a back street. I've stayed everywhere from the poshest manoir aux quat'saisons to the simplest hostal Miguel in Nerja, and this was the least friendly welcome I've ever had.
