Tides Inn & Suites

I’d give the place a 3.5 out of 5, rounded down because there was no breakfast. Room 102 on the first floor was spacious and clean, check-in was easy, parking plentiful, the mattress comfortable, and the views spectacular. The jacuzzi tub was clean-looking and easy to get into. The hotel is south of the main downtown strip, quiet for a spot right on the road, and looking out the window was a pleasure with deer and aquatic life around. There were a few things that got in the way of a decent stay. The room was 55F when we arrived and took four hours to reach 68F, so it wasn’t a warm welcome on a cold day. The floors were cold too, and slippers would help in colder months. The faucets ran dangerously hot and could burn you. The jacuzzi jets were weak, and their motor was very loud. The shower door opened by itself, which I reported to the front desk. I also reported the TV cable box, which shut off and reset 5-10 minutes after being switched on. We could hear people upstairs walking and moving suitcases loudly. If you need a dark room to sleep, the bright, flickering pilot light in the fireplace may keep you awake.

The ocean view was lovely, but it couldn't make up for how neglected the room felt. Dust and debris were in the drawers, a dead fly sat on the sill, and long black hairs were on the bathroom towels. Even the toilet paper had already been used and folded back. The room was cold for ages, and the bathroom stayed freezing. The dated wall heater and fireplace didn't help much. The jacuzzi tub had broken, dirty grout, was old, and couldn't be used after 10pm. Its tiny bath mat looked made for a child. We couldn't watch the TV from the tub, and finding an outlet was a struggle. The refrigerator, microwave, and towel caddy were crammed into the closet, with the coffee maker near the door and bathroom. Everything felt oddly arranged. At check-in, the older woman at the desk was incredibly rude to my husband, repeatedly saying “I doubt that” when he said he was checking in for our reservation, had an early check-in, and lived locally in 98382. I don't know why she treated him that way. We dress well, drive nice cars, and have good manners. There was no breakfast. Employees took guest parking spots with their dogs in running cars, leaving us to park far away in a shabby side lot. Smoking wasn't allowed in the room or on balconies, so we had to go 25 ft from doors, windows, and buildings. It feels like they've cut too many corners. We paid too much for a room without basic amenities, breakfast, or decent service. The view is peaceful, but I left feeling we should have gotten a lot more for the price. I've seen the rude replies to other reviews, so I expect one here too. I hope they deal with longstanding problems through repairs and better service, instead of thanking guests rudely for a “prolix” review. Calling that word amusing, given the source, was rude. They seem to have plenty of bad manners at the Tides Inn and Suites. I could say more, with even more geriatric sass than class, and share more photos if invited.

The patio was open this time, which was nice since it had been under repair on my last visit. Breakfast wasn't available, though. I still like staying here: the room's soaking tub and classy decor make it comfortable, and the waterfront view is great. Restaurants and shops are an easy walk away.

A quiet, clean room and the ocean right outside the door made this a great stop. After a week on the road, my wife and I found the best bed and pillows of our trip here. We'll stay again when we come back to Port Townsend.
