I've come back for a second visit and still think it's incredible. The location is terrific, with great food and entertainment just a short walk or rented bike ride away. They have regular shows downstairs and a great soaking pool. The cheapest room has no fridge or TV, but I don't mind since I'm not in portland to watch television. The rooms are just right for me. Highly recommend.

The Crystal Hotel really captures Portland for me: fun, sexy, and a little weird. The building's five stories are full of art, and finding the answer to the passport program riddle for a hotel stamp, then taking a photo, was a fun little loyalty activity. The basement pool is open until 1am, with no kids after 8, and it can feel quite intimate down there. I can't say how private the rooms are sound-wise, but my night was peaceful. Online check-in made arrival quick and simple. Both rooms were immaculate, warm, and inviting, with towels, robes, restaurant menus, and local guidance laid out. The disinfectant smell was strong, like everything had just been cleaned, but not overpowering. It's a beautiful, romantic place for a couples night. For "hot nights," I'd suggest the king suites at the corner ends of the Flatiron shaped building. Those angled ends may be the most private, with two baths right outside the suites and a back staircase before you reach any other rooms.

The room was comfortable and clean, with plenty of towels and no unpleasant odors. We didn't have a private shower, but having a sink in the room was a nice touch. From the window I enjoyed the sunset and watching people below. We went to the soaking pool twice, and with only a few people there each time, it was a relaxing place to linger. Dinner at the restaurant was unusual and tasty, and the staff were kind and informative. Checking in online shortly before we arrived also made getting to the room easier.

The food and drinks were amazing, and I felt completely safe walking around. Portland is doing a great job cleaning up the area. The staff and rooms were great too, and I'd absolutely stay here again. There are rooms with your own bathroom, so look for one when booking. I'd recommend this place to anyone.

The warm pool was a real highlight, and everyone we met was friendly and helpful. I love these old buildings, and McMennamins does a great job with them. Road noise and limited sound insulation come with the age of the buildings, which is part of what McMennamins does. If you're okay with that and don't need the place to be different, it's fabulous.
