University Place Hotel & Conference Center

Free parking was a definite plus, and breakfast was included. I ate it each morning: they had a waffle maker, yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, and cereals. I stayed three days while getting treatment at OHSU, so being near the hospital was very convenient. There was an old lingering smell from the carpet in both the hallway and my room, possibly from carpet cleaner. It was unpleasant throughout the stay.

The hotel works well as a base for visiting Portland or PSU, with lots of things in walking distance and train stops right in front. Eateries are nearby, and the restaurant was good, though not great. The bar food was decent and reasonably priced. Rooms are economical, though they could use an upgrade. They’re decent, and the staff are nice. It’s kid and pet friendly, with ample parking. Not a five-star hotel, and it doesn’t claim to be, but I’d rate it very good for a visit.

Breakfast was about what I expected, though the housemade granola was exceptional. The breakfast room and food spread were kept very tidy. Food trucks are just a short walk away, and OHSU is very convenient, about a 7-8 minute drive. The rooms felt very tired and had maintenance issues. The noisy air conditioning and heat were typical in my experience.

Check-in was easy, I felt safe in the neighborhood, and it was close to the hospital we were visiting the next morning. I had a great experience overall. My one complaint is the $75 damage fee, which you eventually get back, but they take the parking fee out of it. Most people drive to a motel, and at $13 per car they’re making quite a bit from parking.
