Ramada Plaza by Wyndham Portland

The location is good, but the stay was a letdown. We’d reserved a large suite for four adults and a child, with two double beds and one full bed, but got a room with only two doubles. When we asked about other options, they said there were no rooms and not even a cot. They promised to check on a cot and call, but never did. We improvised a bed for the child using a chair and something like a couch. The parking lot was packed with cars belonging to people going to the bar next door. They forgot they were a hotel, and missed the basics: beds. The room smelled odd, like someone had cooked with spices, and the alarm clock was dusty. For the price, it was bad. I’ve had better stays at a Super 8, and that says a lot.

Jim and Mark do a great job looking after the pool and hot tubs. The hotel is in a great location, and the common areas are clean and nicely decorated. The whole staff made us feel welcome when we arrived. I highly recommend staying here.

The front desk staff were friendly and brought extra blankets when I asked. The beds came with only sheets, though, and the pillows were a mixed bag: some comfortable, some flat and dead. The room temperature kept changing, the room looked very worn, and the hallways smelled like cigarettes. The gym was tiny, mostly a couple of treadmills and a cable machine. Have I stayed in worse rooms? Yes. Do I want to stay here again? No.

It’s okay for a quick overnight if all you need is a bed, but I didn’t sleep well because noise travels through the walls and ceilings. The hotel felt loud, old and poorly maintained. The room itself was decent enough and the bed was clean, but the pool bathroom was in rough shape, with rusted fixtures and dated everything. The hot tub water looked gross and foamed with the jets off, which didn’t inspire confidence about its cleanliness. There weren’t any pool towels on the weekend, either. The main Portland attractions aren’t close, so expect to drive for most things. Some guests seemed not to mind the condition, but it wasn’t for me. Not ideal if you want updated, clean facilities or a convenient location.
