The Store

John was a great source of Raleigh tips, and my stay was splendid. The place feels more like a lovely Airbnb than a traditional hotel, with a homey, quiet atmosphere. There’s no front desk, but John is available with recommendations and information. The building is old and quirky, with creaky floors and doors that can be tricky. It has just two rooms, so privacy wasn’t an issue. The king room has a private bathroom, while the queen room has one across the hall. It’s also a bit away from the main downtown area. The convention center, for example, is more than a 30-minute walk. Public transit was okay but not very reliable. Being outside downtown made things quieter and feel safer, though getting around could be a little annoying. I’d stay again.

The inn and garden are filled with original art, and the place feels both cozy and chic. John is a wonderful host with loads of Raleigh knowledge. The photos almost capture how lovely it is.

John has made the house beautiful and thought through what guests need in their rooms. He creates a homely feel and knows Raleigh inside out, with great recommendations for the area. The property is in a quiet neighborhood, within walking distance of major attractions and restaurants. Highly recommend, and I’d stay again. 10/10.

“The floors have a gentle creak. The rest feels thoughtfully made. We left The Store already missing it.” John built the place with care, keeping the old parts where they belong and adding modern touches where they help. The floors have a little character, but aren’t too loud. He welcomed us warmly and seemed genuinely interested in who we were. John shared the story of what he’d made in an open, easy way. When it was time to go, he was just as present and unhurried as when we arrived. It felt like leaving a friend, not simply checking out of an inn. Laura and I came for one night. We’ll be back.
