Hyatt Place Rapid City / Downtown

The furniture in both the rooms and lobby seemed picked for appearance, not comfort, and it was awful. Breakfast was a joke, and housekeeping never came during our three-night stay, even though every-other-day service should have happened. One evening, housekeepers were still going up and down the halls at 9 p.m.; the ones I saw seemed unhappy and were grumbling until they noticed me. The front desk was often unattended, with a sign saying someone would be back, which is unacceptable for a downtown hotel. The location is the only reason this avoided a one-star review. I’m severely disappointed. If another downtown hotel opens, this place will be easy pickings. Avoid it.

The rest of the staff were courteous, the hotel was very clean and tidy, and Shannon the bartender was a big help with our sightseeing plans. But when we checked in, we asked Aris, the desk clerk, if our three rooms could be near one another. We got a casual remark about needing to check the paper, then no real effort to arrange it. Instead, our rooms ended up on three different floors.

Yolanda was especially friendly and helpful. The location also made it easy to get around, and the rooms were standard Hyatt Place rooms. Breakfast was ordinary but fine. My main issue was the room cleaning: I found moldy food on the rug, so the floor hadn’t been cleaned properly between guests. The building’s windows could use a cleaning too, especially on the outside.

This is a newer hotel with good security. Breakfast is free, though the choices are limited. Maid service each day has to be requested, and the usual refresh is every other day, with towels replaced, trash emptied, and the bed made. On our refresh, they left only a few towels and didn’t make the bed.
