I had a fabulous tent camping stay from Sept. 25-29. My campsite overlooked a stunning valley, and I even saw some deer nearby. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the clean bathrooms and showers were conveniently located for my tent site. The park is ideally placed for getting to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, and other tourist attractions. I highly recommend staying here.

Those sunrise views from my camper door have been spectacular, especially the ones that look like fire. We’ve been here a month and still have a few days left, and I’d happily stay again. The location makes it easy to get into town and to places around the area, usually within an hour or less. The road is busy, but I haven’t noticed the traffic noise. Staff have all been friendly, from the maintenance guy and desk workers to the cleaning crew. The little office store carries essentials and souvenirs. Facilities include a seasonal pool, laundry ($2.50 to wash, $2.25 to dry), a game room, and a couple of hotel rooms. There are several restroom buildings; the one near us has four sinks, four showers, a few toilets, and two urinals. It’s cleaned daily and mostly updated. The upper sites are mostly pull-through, though they aren’t very big. Lower down are tent sites and cabins, and those spots seem to have less than full hookups. My only real complaint is that the campground roads are rough. I’ll try to add a picture.

The city overlook lounge is a little gem, and the views are spectacular. Staff are incredibly friendly, and the prices are very reasonable. The downside is how tight the sites are for motorhomes or trailers over 28 feet with slides. They’re very narrow, and the roads are rough too.

The location worked well for our stay, and the staff were consistently pleasant and courteous. The bathroom facilities were clean, though we had no hot water on four of our five days. There was nowhere to put our things or hang clothes, apart from the sink counter or floor. Our cabin had several problems: the TV was missing its power cord, and they couldn’t fix it, though they refunded part of the TV cost. The picnic table, front step, and cabin floor were all in poor condition. Parking was also tight for our large pickup.

The front desk was helpful, including when I had trouble with a washer. Rushmore is within 25 miles, and there are decent restaurants nearby. The campground was okay overall, but it needs updating and maintenance. There was traffic noise at night, and big rigs may have a hard time getting into and out of the sites. The sites are flat and gravelly, with erosion at the ends of some, while the park as a whole sits on an incline. The sites also feel packed together, like slices of bread. The dog run doubles as the kids’ playground, which may not sit well with parents when dogs use the area to do their business. There were no poop bags when we let our dogs out. It’s below the campground, only partly fenced, and the steep section has no fence. One of my dogs wanted to run up that hill toward the RV area. The steps down are wide and have railings, but my arthritis made them difficult to use. The laundry room has six washers and dryers, but three washers were out of order. There’s no parking in front, and I didn’t want to carry two baskets up the incline. If you have a big rig, I’d look for another park.
