Raton itself felt quaint and relaxing, but our room didn’t quite match. The TV didn’t work at all, though we were tired enough to just go to bed after traveling. The sink was either off or blasting water across the whole counter, which might be funny until you’re caught off guard and water goes everywhere. The keycard kept flashing red instead of green, although a slight push still opened the door. More concerning, the door didn’t seem to latch or seal properly. A small pull on the handle opened it right up, so we barricaded it for peace of mind. That solved it, more or less. Three stars.

It was decent for the price, and checking in after midnight was no trouble even though we arrived late. The room was okay for what we paid. What bothered me was a note from housekeeping asking for a tip. I usually leave something at hotels and motels, but seeing a request in the room annoyed me. Tips are optional everywhere, and they got a big goose egg from me. Please don’t leave notes asking for tips.

This place has gone downhill since the new owners took over and rebranded it as a Travelodge. The toilet seat was cracked, the bedside light hasn’t worked in months, and the handicapped parking was marked incorrectly.

For 60 bucks, this was a pretty decent stop. I was coming from Albuquerque on my way to Denver a few weeks ago and arrived around 3:30 a.m., but check-in was quick and smooth. The room was clean and had the biggest single bed I’ve ever seen. All three of us slept side by side with room left over, which was all I could ask for considering it used to be a Motel 6. We went next door to McDonald's for breakfast, even though breakfast is included here too.

We made a last-minute stop at the Raton Travelodge and didn’t get there to check in until after 11:30 p.m. The front desk gentleman greeted me with a smile and was helpful and considerate of what we needed. The hotel was easy to find, and the room was comfortable and pet friendly. I’d definitely stay again when passing through.
