Dean gave us a great tour and shared the building’s history. The living room and fireplace are spectacular, and everything was very clean. We had a lovely staycation in the City of Reading, have already recommended The Mansion on Hampden to family, and plan to return.
The owner, housekeeper, and Sadie the dog were all welcoming and really nice. This place has a fascinating past: it belonged to a wealthy textile tycoon, became a convalescent home, returned to private ownership, and is now a bed and breakfast. The B&B occupies the former convalescent home, so there are wide doors, hallway lights above them, and old pull switches and intercoms in the rooms, though I’m sure those don’t work. It’s a strange setup, but very cool. Most of the rest of this jewel of a house is open to wander through, with antique wood paneling and beautiful details everywhere. A lot of character and history here.
The mansion is quiet, charming, clean, and welcoming, and the staff are so nice. I’d stay here again in a heartbeat if I get the chance.
Service was top notch, and our room was spacious and very clean. This is a unique place with lots of history. We enjoyed our stay.
