There are places to eat close by, either on foot or a short drive, and the area stays nice and quiet. We’ve stayed here before because it’s handy for visiting family and the Cooperstown NY attractions. The rooms are clean, kept up well, and have what you need for a comfortable stay. The staff are friendly, and we’ll definitely come back.

I noticed The Village Motel while driving past because it looked so well cared for. My husband and I prefer independent motels over chains when we can. The room had an old-fashioned feel inside, which wasn’t surprising, but it was spotless and equipped just as well as a modern motel. It’s right on the main street downtown, with restaurants within walking distance.

Read the fine print carefully. They don’t allow late check-ins, and if you miss the check-in time, they’ll cancel your stay without a refund. At least most of the other motels in the area seem pretty solid.

The couple who run the place were friendly and felt more like neighbors than hosts. They checked during our stay to see if we needed anything and were happy to help. I rented a room for five nights while attending the opera nearby. It was quiet and very clean, and the location worked great for getting to the opera house.

The detergent smell was so overpowering once we got into bed that it made me feel like throwing up. When we pulled back the sheets, there were bed bugs all over. My wife and I had to leave. We’re both 60, and ended up driving along a dark, rainy road to Rotterdam, where we got a much better hotel for the same price, with a pool and free breakfast. At first, this place had seemed fine.
