Fairfield Inn by Marriott Richmond

The location had us nervous because it sits beside a rundown truck stop, but the hotel itself turned out to be amazing. It was spotless inside and out, and the staff were great. Our room had high ceilings and tasteful decor, with a really comfortable bed and pillows. It was quiet too, without that squeaky, clanky metal bed frame. Even the bath and shower were impressive. One of the best places we've stayed in a while.

The road and howling wind came through the thin window, and the noise made the stay unpleasant. The exercise area was cramped, with treadmills set at an angle, missing 10-pound weights, no mat, and a hard metal-like floor that made planks or push-ups impossible. The fridge was new and worked, though its inner tape was still on and the shelves hadn't been set up. There were cleanliness problems too. I moved the phone from the small nightstand and found crumbs on the coffee table that weren't mine. When I opened the coffee maker to check its disconnected hose, I found mold all through the water reservoir. The front desk brought me another machine after I called, but I shouldn't have had to deal with that. The staff were friendly when I arrived, but I wouldn't stay again because of the cleanliness issues.

After a long trip, we managed a quick swim and hot tub visit before they closed. Our room was clean and the bed was super comfortable. Breakfast had eggs and a biscuit sandwich, plus a waffle maker my son loved. I'd recommend it if you're in Richmond.

For an overnight stop during our road trip, this worked out really well. The room was clean and nice, and the front desk was helpful. Breakfast was fresh and tidy, and the attendant was so friendly. Much appreciated.
