Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Rio Grande City

The staff have always been friendly and welcoming on both of my stays. The hotel is close to the main part of town without being right in the middle of the chaos. I grew up here, so I tell my husband just about everything is 2-5 minutes away. There's also a gas station and dollar store nearby for late night runs if you need something or forgot it.

We were only in Rio Grande City for a quick trip and spent one night here. The room was clean and cool, and both the bathroom and TV were in working order. The staff greeted us warmly.

The room itself was nice and quiet, but a blue light on the thermostat kept me awake all night. Breakfast was disappointing. The milk had run out, so I went to the front desk to ask for more. A minute later, the breakfast area worker came around the corner shaking her head and stomping her feet. The bacon and sausage didn't look cooked, and when I asked for cinnamon rolls, I got no response. She stomped off and we didn't see her again. I can only assume she didn't speak English or was pretending not to, but either way, that's no excuse. If we need to stay another night, we'll check other hotels in the area first.

Breakfast was good, the desk attendants were nice enough, and the WiFi was great. The rest of our two-week stay in August 2024 was rough. When I checked in, the room was clean, but there was some mold on the ceiling over the bed, visibly growing behind the drywall. Three days later it had tripled in size. I told the front desk, and she casually said the AC unit in the room above was leaking and that maintenance would come. They arrived a few hours later, sprayed bleach on it, and wiped it away. Four days after that, the mold was back. Good luck to the next guest. August can be humid here, and there's no exhaust fan in the bathroom, so the walls sweat after a normal shower and your towel never dries. That wouldn't be as much of a problem with daily housekeeping, but during our two weeks we got it only once, after asking. Trash piled up, the floors were dirty, we ran out of toilet paper, and the towels were old and damp. When we asked for service a second time, we were told we'd have to wait two days. There were crickets all over the first floor, including the lobby, dining area, and my room. Some days I killed three or four, but I'd still wake up in the middle of the night to one chirping somewhere in the room. Two stars.
