We'd stayed at other La Quinta hotels without problems, and this may have been a fluke, but I won't return to this one or recommend it. My family was there for my daughter's pageant, and this was one of the worst stays I can remember after years of traveling. A few people were genuinely kind: the person who heard my complaints was helpful, the breakfast worker made my daughter a waffle when a breast-cancer survival group wouldn't notice she was waiting at the waffle maker, and our room was clean without smelling of chemicals. Things went wrong starting at check-in. The clerk greeted me, then took a call from someone looking for a room and checked on them while silently tossing things on the counter for me. My room number wasn't written on the key folder, so I had to find it on my reservation papers. Neither key worked, though a nicer staff member reprogrammed them. Inside, the comforter had come loose from its cover. Whoever cleaned last had balled it up inside the cover and pushed it under the bed. Friday breakfast was microwaved potatoes and breakfast pizzas, I think, that made me feel sick. The second morning was better except the eggs turned metallic and plasticky after about four bites and became hard to eat. I chose the hotel partly for the hot tub because I'd recently hurt my back. At first it was cold, perhaps colder than the pool. Once I adjusted, the jets felt good, so it wasn't a complete loss. I reported it, and the helpful person who'd fixed the keys said they'd fired the maintenance worker that morning and she'd call someone in the morning. The next evening, after a long day at the pageant, steam on the pool room windows made us hopeful. But the room was like walking into tear gas, which I've experienced. There was so much chlorine that it was nearly uninhabitable. We tried the tub for a minute or two, but my eyes felt like they were bleeding even while closed. We left to rinse our suits; my daughter's left a pink puddle on the floor when we hung it up. We were inside less than five minutes, yet all three of us had eye and throat pain afterwards. My daughter lost her voice the next day, on interview day at the pageant.

Getting around during the construction was a mess. The only way into the lobby was a sketchy side entrance, and reaching breakfast meant navigating a maze of halls and stairs. My family had booked a king suite with a pullout couch, but there was no couch because the hotel had removed them all. They had one cot left, so someone had to sleep in a small armchair. The listing says there's a pool and hot tub, though the hot tub had been closed for over a year. Breakfast choices were limited, the waffle iron was broken, and nobody seemed to be working on replacing it. The halfway decent sausage patty was the one bright spot. The advertised free Wi-Fi was so slow I couldn't load videos, and the workout room treadmill was inaccurate. I definitely didn't wake up in a good mood.

Breakfast was decent, better than at some other places, though the omelettes looked mass produced. The room itself was unbelievably tiny, the smallest I've ever had at a hotel. Its bathroom felt like one on an airplane, seriously. There was lots of noise from the elevator beside our room whenever it ran. The Wi-Fi didn't work, and when it did connect, it was so slow it was nearly useless.

They're turning the Rochester South La Quinta into a Holiday Inn Express, which they expected to complete by December 2015. With all the construction noise and smells, this isn't a good choice if you want a quiet stay. The temporary entrance is difficult to use and not ADA friendly. There are already nine Holiday Inn family hotels in Greater Rochester, so I don't see why they need another.

The room was on the small side, but I had a really good stay and would come back. The staff were a ten, breakfast was excellent, and it was good value.
