La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Rockford

The front desk employees were very nice, but the rest of this stay was awful. I paid more than I would’ve at nearby hotels because I expected better upkeep and cleanliness. The hotel was extremely dirty and poorly maintained, as the photos show. The hallways and even areas outside smelled strongly of marijuana. In the lobby, a large industrial air freshener kept spraying an overpowering scent that didn’t cover it and made the air feel heavier. With my asthma, that was especially uncomfortable. The room smelled like a mix of dog, urine, foot odor, and mildew. The marijuana smell coming from the hallway was so strong I stuffed towels under the big gap beneath the door. The bed was very hard, and the shower pressure was low. The cleanliness was nowhere near what I expected for the price.

Everything felt welcoming, from the spotless hotel and lovely smell throughout to my immaculate, cozy, comfortably warm room. The staff were incredibly kind, attentive, and helpful. Even the front desk concessions were reasonably priced, which was a nice surprise. I loved my weekend stay and will choose this hotel every time I visit Rockford.

We usually stay at our regular hotel with our family of seven, but trying somewhere else this week was a mistake. The bathtub was extremely small, and you need to get a separate key from the front desk to enter the pool area. They also asked for all sorts of information when we arrived, including our license plate, car make, and model. I’d never been asked for that elsewhere. My son and I sat in the breakfast area without my husband and our other four kids, who were waiting for us to bring breakfast up. I called him to explain, and while I was waiting for him to gather them and come down, a customer and employee got into a fight. I don’t know what it was about. It was a very bad experience, and we won’t be back.

The staff were exceptional whenever we interacted, from check-in and checkout to breakfast. They had hot eggs and sausage, plus waffles, yogurt, cereal, bread, honey buns, oatmeal, coffee, milk, and orange juice. The location is convenient, with easy access to everything and a Walmart nearby for quick needs. I felt safe, though the doors slam loudly, and that along with the rather firm mattress affected my sleep a bit. The hotel is kept hot, especially this time of year, and they don’t skimp on heat. I had a King Suite with a couch in the living room style setup, which felt homey. The rooms aren’t the most streamlined, and the tub caulking was peeling with a little water damage on the ceiling, but it still felt very clean. I usually hesitate to shower in hotels, but had no hesitation here. Dove Shampoo/Conditioner and Body Wash dispensers are mounted inside the shower. The softened water was a pleasant surprise and made the shower feel luxurious.
