The breakfast had a good variety, and during the snowstorm the hotel even had a big pot of vegetable beef soup for guests. With most restaurants closed, that thoughtful extra really hit the spot. I needed to be near work during the storm, and this was a solid, dependable choice. I’d read several negative reviews before reluctantly booking the Residence Inn in Rocky Mount, NC, but I’m glad I gave it a chance. My three-night room was very clean and had everything I needed. The linens were fresh, the bathroom and kitchen area spotless, and the bed comfortable. The decor is definitely dated, but the room, common areas, and grounds were all clean and well maintained.

Breakfast was good and standard for Marriott, though staff service was average and there wasn't much interaction. The location is convenient, but the property needs maintenance and an overall update. At first glance, my room seemed acceptable, with nothing fancy, which is fine if you only need a place to sleep. But there seemed to be mold in a drawer and in the closet area. Worse, part of the carpet was missing, leaving nails exposed. I nearly stepped on them, so I put a towel over the spot to avoid getting hurt during the night. Guests shouldn't have to deal with that. If I return to Black Mountain, I'll probably look for another hotel.

The breakfast staff were very kind, and the hotel itself is convenient, nice, and equipped with what you need. Breakfast wasn't too bad either. But the front desk was another matter. The two women I saw there were curt and unpleasant, though still helpful. They seemed to do the bare minimum. This could easily be a five-star place if staff cared a little more about their work. We had to change rooms because the first toilet had a problem. The room was nice, but there were stains on the wall, a strange cutout around the shower head, dust on the shower handle, and a piece of carpet ripped up in the corner. The dust made me doubt the shower had just been cut before we arrived, and it looked more like it hadn't been properly cleaned. I didn't feel fully clean after showering. Cleaning means sanitizing and scrubbing, not just putting things back in place.

This place needs to shut down. It's a disgrace to the Marriott brand. I stayed February 21-23, 2026, after booking through Expedia for $274.58 for two nights, pay at property. The hotel put a $360 hold on my card at check-in. After checkout, I got a call saying my card had declined and they were trying additional charges. A separate $164.57 charge went through, and it didn't clearly match my reservation total. I also got incorrect checkout emails, including one dated after I had already checked out February 28th. Staff gave me conflicting explanations about billing. The room had visible mold, ripped carpet, and dirty bedding. Completely disappointing for a Marriott branded property.

The staff are friendly, which is why I give it three stars, but the rooms are dated and need repairs. The shower head and piping were loose, the sink drained slowly, and the carpet was dingy with a heavily stained couch. I'm surprised Marriott hasn't required improvements. I wouldn't stay again until they make significant changes.
