The Montague is a beautiful old place that probably was wonderful in its prime. Check-in was easy, and they showed us around the hotel and our rooms, which were a nice size. Still, I was surprised they didn’t check my ID or confirm the credit card was mine. Some areas show wear. The library and lobby are nice, but the fireplace was never lit, even though it was 10 degrees outside. They said it worked, so I’m not sure why it wasn’t on. I didn’t see any bar or food service, although they advertise it, maybe that’s just in summer. The breakfast was mediocre, and both days had the same food. Heating was the biggest problem: we couldn’t control it, and our rooms became like saunas in the middle of the night. The doors use old-fashioned regular locks, and around 10 p.m. the staff leave the back door unlocked with keys on the desk for late arrivals. I’d like to see a more secure system. Between the heat and the safety and security concerns, I won’t be back.

This gorgeous 1930s house has so much character. We enjoyed the antiques, old photographs, and books that gave it a sense of history. The staff were very friendly, check-in was quick and easy, and the owners clearly care about their guests. The place could be a five out of five if the owners put some money into repairs and upkeep and hired professionals for the work instead of trying to DIY everything. There were peeling walls, cracks and holes, missing window caulk, rotting wood around the glass, rusty vents caked with lint and dirt, a ceiling hole in our room plugged with paper towels, and a bathroom wall swollen with moisture and falling apart. I noticed a slight mildew smell too. The room wasn’t dirty, but seeing the house deteriorate made me sad. Breakfast, which people had praised, was only okay: eggs with a couple shells, overcooked sausage, soggy pancakes and triangular waffles, oily potatoes, slightly stale bagels, bananas, small yogurts, and coffee with no flavor. Covering bread items and heating them underneath makes them rubbery and soggy. The bed was small and uncomfortable, with a badly dented old mattress, though the sheets and blankets were soft. The place does make you feel transported back in time, lumpy mattress and all.

We spent three nights here over Christmas and would gladly return on our next trip to Saginaw. The mansion was beautifully decorated, and our room was tidy and homey. There wasn’t much variety at breakfast, but it came with our stay. We especially enjoyed the personal tour of the mansion and the local stories about it. Every staff member we met went out of their way to help us. What a charming place!

I stayed one night on the third floor, where the only room with two beds had twin-size beds. The staff were friendly, supportive, and great. Breakfast was more than I expected, with a full banquet of food. I’d stay again if I’m in town. It’s a lovely historic mansion, and I loved the library and dining room. It would be a great place for a wedding.

We stayed in the Jackson Church Room in the carriage house. The building and setting are beautiful, and the location was great. The staff were friendly, the room was warm, and the shower had plenty of hot water and great pressure. They brought an extra blanket right down when I called, which was nice, and I folded it up to use as padding because the bed was a deal breaker. The mattress felt like it was from 1929, with an old, crispy foam pad on top that didn’t help. The lamp shades were falling apart, and nearly everything seemed old and in need of refreshing. Cleanliness could have been much better, especially around the toilet base. The hot breakfast wasn’t bad, but the coffee was horrible and the water I asked for to make tea was only lukewarm. The carriage house had a coffee maker but no pot or cups, just some grounds that weren’t useful. The TV was positioned so awkwardly you had to twist your neck to watch. I wouldn’t recommend this place or stay again, even though it’s a beautiful building.
