SpringHill Suites by Marriott Salt Lake City Downtown

I especially liked the gym, since they had a Concept 2 rower for my morning workout, something many hotels don’t offer. The room was roomy, with several kinds of pillows, and I found one that made for a great night’s sleep. Internet was fast enough for all my work without sluggish loading. There was a good snack selection and several breakfast options, too. The hotel was clean and customer service was spot on. Parking is free, just tell the front desk your vehicle’s color, make, and model.

The room and bed were nice, and check-in went smoothly. There was plenty of parking in the dedicated lot. But an unscheduled boiler outage in the evening meant no shower, and when water came back it was disgusting. On Saturday, the breakfast area was dark at 6 a.m.; I asked and learned they don’t open until 7, exactly when I had to leave. So I got no breakfast benefit. Maybe this works for families, but it doesn’t suit a business traveler, and I’m taking it off my list.

Even after I declined housekeeping twice, staff still went into my room while my personal belongings and intimate items were out. The shower didn’t work either. Joyce in management was rude and didn’t seem to care about the privacy breach. She offered 5,000 points as a fix. I’ve stayed at several Marriott’s with shower problems and never complained, since I don’t like doing that. This time, though, the invasion of privacy and the unprofessional way it was handled left me very disappointed.

We chose this hotel for New Year’s Eve, and the stay ruined our holiday. Breakfast was advertised as included, but when we came down in the morning there was no food at all, not even a few items left. The breakfast area also had a young man who seemed intoxicated. He smelled very bad, wore dirty clothes, and made things deeply uncomfortable for our family. The staff member there didn’t seem to know how to handle it or ask him to leave. Management and control felt completely absent, with no concern for guests. Terrible service. We won’t return and wouldn’t recommend it.
