Matador Motel

I stayed for a couple of nights and asked the owner or clerk to take $10 off since we checked in at 11 PM, but he wouldn’t budge. The first room had roaches and smelled of smoke, though he was nice enough to move us. The second room was nice, with a big king bed and cold AC. I loved the marble restroom counter, and the bathroom and bathtub were clean, modern, and very nice. Be careful, though, because the tub is slippery.

The room smelled like sewage, had flies, and the key wouldn’t open the door. There were homeless people hanging around by the rooms. The worker, who was the owner, kept repeating the checkout time and seemed more concerned about that. When I asked the price, I was asked whether I’d pay cash or card. Never again.

This motel is clean, friendly, roomy, and comfortable, with a decent TV and cold AC at a very competitive rate. The tall cyclone fence and barbed wire can seem a bit daunting, but it means there’s only one way in or out. They clearly work hard to keep the place safe and nice. There’s no coffee pot or free breakfast, though the neighborhood is pretty nice and a Bill Miller BBQ that serves breakfast is just a block and a half away. It’s great for solo travelers and close to everything, with downtown, the River Walk, South SA, and parks all an easy drive away. Highly recommended. Tell ’em The Hungry Texan sent you.

The staff are friendly and willing to work with my requests. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and the price is great. Definitely recommend!
