The room was spotless, and the bed, pillows, and soft, fresh-smelling towels were all great. Its long hallway to the bathroom also made the layout feel surprisingly spacious. After a long travel day, I checked in around 11:30 PM, and the friendly front desk agent made it quick and welcoming. The hotel itself is clean, comfortable, and well run, with pleasant staff. The pool is small, private, well maintained, and has towels. Valet parking is expensive, but efficient and painless. The drive from San Diego International Airport was short, though the last few blocks can take time if there's an event or street activity. Google Maps sent me on a couple of odd detours, so enter from Fifth Street. A few things to know: the area around the hotel felt a bit sketchy and could be cleaner, though that's not the hotel's fault. The rooftop bar has limited hours and an incomplete liquor selection because of an ownership transition. It only lets you charge to your room, with no cash or card, which wasn't ideal for a business trip. And that $25 old-fashioned had a very light pour. Ouch. Even with those quirks, I'd happily stay again if I'm downtown and can navigate the neighborhood.
I think this AC is rated far too low based on my recent stay. The rooftop alone makes it worth checking out, and the price is a steal. My room wasn't directly in front, so my experience may differ from other guests'. It's in a great spot, surrounded by restaurants and things to do, and right down the street from Petco. Just know that 5th Street can get rowdy at night.
The central Gaslamp location made it easy to walk around the city, and our stay at AC Hotel San Diego Gaslamp Quarter was very pleasant. The hotel is modern, clean, and well maintained, with comfortable rooms and a stylish, relaxing feel. The staff were friendly, and everything went smoothly. It can get a little loud at night in this part of Gaslamp, but the hotel provides a sound machine that really helped us sleep. Otherwise, everything was great.
We were told by locals that our hotel was in the middle of everything, and they were right. Downtown San Diego is a fun area. We walked to Petco Park for a Banana Ball game and tried some great restaurants. We loved Noodle & Bun, and the burger and pizza places across the street from AC Hotel San Diego Downtown were fantastic too. The staff were attentive and the service was great. The rooftop pool is small, only 3 ft deep, but the water was the perfect temperature for cooling off before heading back to the rooftop bar for a drink. It was loud all night, though the white noise machines the hotel provides helped a lot. Worth the price.
The view was terrible, and I had a linen issue. The manager responded promptly and cleaned the room. I'd have preferred a discount, but they did a good job fixing it. I like Marriott hotels, and this one is decent, right in the heart of San Diego. It's easy to get around on foot or take a short Uber to the bay or military base. I'll return despite the linen hiccup.
