Residence Inn by Marriott San Diego La Jolla

They really understand service here. The rooms are consistently clean and comfortable, and the place works just as well for a one-day visit as for a month. Breakfast is good, especially since it's included in the price.

There were plenty of nearby places to eat, and it was a short Uber ride to downtown San Diego or La Jolla. Our room had lots of space to get ready and spread out for the formal event. We were in town for a wedding weekend, and Lesslye at the front desk was wonderful, so welcoming, sweet, and helpful the whole time. PJ was kind and welcoming too. E, we'd definitely stay here again!

We won't be coming back. We got in two hours early after a 430-mile drive, and although the room was ready, they wanted another $10 per hour for early access. I'd rather they had simply told me the room wasn't ready. Leaving at 7 a.m. when checkout was at noon didn't get us any money back either, which felt like about $50 to me. A couple of weeks later I was back in the area and stayed at a different Marriott, the Courtyard. Traffic was good again, I arrived early, and they welcomed me into a ready room without charging extra.

I used to have good stays here, but our October visit fell short. The room smelled of pesticides and the furniture was stained and worn. Parking is now charged at a high rate, too. The worst was being treated like a criminal over a $112 balance when I needed to switch cards, even though we'd just paid $1700 for the suite. At 10:30 p.m. a front desk worker came with a security guard to get the card, despite our having told a front desk manager earlier that evening we'd settle up in the morning. We'd even been at the desk to print SeaWorld tickets and give them a card. Before the guard came to the door, the desk woman called and basically said I was lying about speaking with the manager at 6 p.m. I'm a Marriott Bonvoy member with a great tier level, and I called to file a complaint. The property's GM never apologized. They offered points for another stay instead, but I won't stay there again and am switching to Hilton properties.
