Handlery Union Square Hotel

The location is handy, just by Union Square and close to shopping, sightseeing, and transit. A staff member was always at the entrance, which made me feel secure. The building is older and has historic charm, while my room was clean and comfortable enough to relax in. Check-in was easy, and the staff were friendly and helpful throughout. I forgot to ask for a receipt at checkout, but emailed later and the hotel sent it quickly. I had a very pleasant stay at the Handlery Union Square Hotel and would recommend it.

I booked at the last minute and everything went smoothly. The front desk greeted me when I arrived, and the staff looked professional, which gave the place a bit of a luxury feel. It’s a historic hotel and clearly shows its age, but it’s well maintained. My room and bathroom were both small, though clean, and the room had everything I needed. Great Union Square location and price. I enjoyed my short stay.

Stephanie, the night auditor, is the reason we came back. Her warmth and genuine care made for the best customer service I’ve had anywhere in the USA. I’ve only experienced something similar or better in Vietnam. Hats off to her. The hotel is a minute from cable cars and a three-minute walk from Muni and BART. The area felt safe, and the hotel is wheelchair accessible. Rooms were clean, with good Wi-Fi, blackout curtains, and medium-firm beds. There are elevators and stairs, restaurants and convenience stores nearby, plus water fountains on the floors and hot water for tea or soup. My room had coffee and a fridge, but no microwave. The restaurant was closed, and the amazing outdoor pool was under renovation until march 2026.

This is a historic building, so the rooms aren’t modern, but I was happy with the bed, furniture, desk, and amenities. I got an upgrade to a large, nice suite on the 8th floor with a fridge, coffee maker, and separate bathroom area. The staff were very nice, and the location is great. I didn’t park here, but Ubers arrive fast. If you’re going to an event or visiting on a busy weeeked, order one an hour or even two ahead because traffic in the area can get really bad.
