The late-night shop downstairs was handy and open late, which saved us money on snacks after exploring. Breakfast waffles were great, and the coffee tasted good without sugar. We also got a very good rate for three nights. Our corner room at the back was much bigger than expected, with a walk-in closet, lovely blinds, and windows that opened. I had a hot bath in the huge tub every night, and the water didn't leave my skin dry like California municipal water usually does. The elevator was cool, and it was easy to get around on foot and catch a bus. Hotel beds are never great, so I don't have much to compare there. The Wi-Fi router was bright enough to light up the room, but we covered it with a T-shirt. Not a big deal. A tip from me: bring an HDMI cable if you want to watch your own streaming services on the TV. And remember, an old hotel from the 1800s will have chipped paint and look dated. A full renovation would take away its charm. Sidewalk hazards and homeless people are a city of SF issue, not something the staff can control.

I booked a deluxe room for one night. The beds were warm and comfortable, the room was clean and bug-free, and we had a great city view. The old building has an antique charm, though it doesn't have modern features. The area felt relatively safe, and we could walk to the Warfield. The toilet wouldn't refill properly, so I had to add water myself to flush. There weren't many outlets for charging, either. Parking isn't provided, and a nearby garage cost me $80. Without the parking hassle, I'd definitely come back.

I understand the policy charges one night for a cancellation, but I don't think that's reasonable. A 24-hour grace period, like airlines offer, would make sense. I cancelled 16 hours after booking and was still charged $230 for a night. My employer's situation had left me unsure whether I needed to book a hotel myself. I confirmed the cancellation by phone, but then got calls at 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. on the night I was supposed to arrive asking when I would check in. Waking up to those calls after already speaking with someone was frustrating. They clearly have a communication problem.

It's a charming old hotel, and breakfast was fine, though they served the same things each day. I was disappointed that I couldn't plug in the fridge and couldn't get coffee once breakfast hours were over.

The hotel's old-time charm and character suit a city with as much history as this one. It was also perfectly placed for exploring on foot or by transit. I stayed four nights and slept well every evening because my room, 401, was quiet, spacious, comfortable, and clean. Every staff member went out of their way to make the stay enjoyable. I was happy with it in so many ways.
