The Monte Cristo

The room was clean, the bathroom looked like it had been remodeled fairly recently, and breakfast was good. It’s a nice little Inn, but the price felt too high for what you get. $350 a night in the middle of the week in February is steep. I can’t imagine what a weekend in December would cost. The amenities feel more like an Inn, without the clean-looking, comfortable experience of a proper hotel, which is why the rate seems excessive.

Inside, the doubts I had about the place disappeared. Everything was spotless and well kept, and the old building had a classic feel that made me comfortable. A friendly man at the front desk told me it dates back to the late 1800s. My upstairs room was cozy and had the modern amenities I’d expect from a hotel, maybe more. I was in San Francisco for work and staying at Monte Cristo Bed and Breakfast. When my Uber dropped me off, I was confused at first and wondered, “Wait, where is it?” It was my first visit to the city, and I hadn’t expected the exterior to be so low-key. Breakfast came to my room every morning, and the shared dining area downstairs had delicious desserts throughout the day. I highly recommend staying here. I can’t imagine choosing anywhere else on my next San Francisco visit.

The room was just like the photos, very clean, and so quiet that we never heard noise from other rooms or the street. I usually get terrible allergies even in hotels, but I didn’t sneeze once here. I wish I’d taken pictures before we made ourselves at home. Jack, the owner, greeted us warmly, explained breakfast and the room, and gave us helpful suggestions for the food we were looking for. The location worked well for the places we wanted to see. We debated whether to have breakfast since we wanted to explore San Francisco’s food, but we’re glad we went. There was fresh mixed fruit and coffee to start, then a great plate with lots of options. I uploaded a photo of the very large breakfast, but it doesn’t show the whole spread. The woman who looked after us was wonderful too. We were only there two nights and wished we’d booked the whole stay. Sad to leave. Thanks for having us!

The breakfast was great every morning, and the sweet woman who made it was the best. They leave snacks out during the day, special treats at night, and coffee, tea, and water are available the whole time. It’s a sweet little place with old charm and nice updates. We had a downstairs room with a queen and a twin, plenty of room for my sister, mom, and me. The bathroom was amazing and roomy. I’d definitely stay again.
