Red Victorian Inn

The Red Vic has a really personal, casual feel because residents run it. We loved that, and within four days we felt at home and hated having to leave. If you're interested, it's easy to meet fun, interesting people and hear about their lives as locals. We picked it as the first stop on our honeymoon through Cali, and it was just right for getting a feel for San Francisco. The rooms are all different and made with lots of love and passion. It seemed pricey at first, but the facilities have everything you need, including an amazing, fully equipped kitchen. Groceries and ingredients are provided, the quality is really good, and there's plenty that's vegetarian or vegan. The neighborhood has a lot going on, with independent shops, tasty food, and two beautiful parks within walking distance. The different people on the streets and the architecture made the area a pleasure to explore. Definitely a great choice if you want an edgy, unique stay.

The room's private bathroom didn't mean much when they didn't make the bed for the first three days, and it was cold because there was no heat beyond a junky portable heater. Plumbing backed up for a whole day, leaving the toilet, sink, and shower unusable. The private entrance also didn't work for nearly two days, so getting inside meant trying to find someone to answer the door. This is my second stay. The first was quiet, better mannered, and better managed, which is why I returned. Under the new management, people shout, scream, and play guitar loudly through the night as if no one else is there. I stay because it's a block from my daughter's apartment. At $185 a night plus tax, anyone who doesn't need this location could find a cleaner, quieter B&B with much better appointments. If all you need is a hostel to crash in, this may be as good as any, but don't come expecting privacy, cleanliness, or service. This is the first review I've ever written, but being free-minded or philosophical isn't an excuse for immature, poor management.

If you're tired of standard accommodation, this is worth a look. The Red Victorian is an eclectic, unusual way to stay in SF, run by something like a commune. Check-in and checkout are easy as long as you remember the passcodes. The rooms are fun and full of character, and art projects fill the hostel/hotel. My favorite was the aquarium toilet. There's a big kitchen to cook in, and food is usually shared.

I went to a birthday party at the Red Victorian and really liked the space and community atmosphere. The main room could fit more than 100 guests, with a DJ setup along the back wall. Upstairs, a small loft had cushions on the floor and tea service. It's a flexible venue for creative people.
