The stay itself was disappointing: the room was cramped, the amenities felt old, and the staff weren't very attentive. At check-in, the people at the desk kept talking for a couple of minutes before helping us. The neighborhood also made walking around in the morning feel scary, with dirty streets and many homeless people for blocks. It was overpriced, and I wouldn't return or recommend it. The bigger issue is still unresolved. For months, I've been trying with my credit card company and Tilden Hotel to get back the difference between what I prepaid and the higher total on the final invoice they gave me at checkout. Tilden Hotel told the card company that invoice was wrong, but won't provide a corrected one or refund the difference. When I contacted them, they said it was the booking company's commission. That makes no sense to me. Why should I cover a fee the booking company charges the hotel? I've booked through that company dozens of times, and at other hotels the prepaid amount has matched the checkout invoice. It sounds to me like Tilden Hotel is trying to avoid admitting it overcharged people and returning money after being caught.

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! This wasn't kid friendly, and the hotel didn't live up to what the website led us to expect. The receptionist could barely understand English and couldn't give us clear advice about parking. The booking.com listing said private parking was offered, but there was no useful information about where to leave the car. Also, people were smoking less than 25 feet from the building, which is against state law.

The TV and bathroom sink gave us a few problems, but the staff took them seriously and helped make the stay pleasant. The GM came to fix the TV as soon as he could, even on a really busy Labor Day weekend. Joy at the front desk was very sweet to me and my children throughout our stay, and made sure the hiccups were addressed. Manny also made a great first impression. He greeted me right away when I arrived and immediately started helping. They make a great team running the hotel.

I never even went inside. There were houseless people sleeping on the street outside the building, and the hotel is in the Tenderloins, the worst part of San Francisco. There's no parking lot, though you can use Public parking on the next block for $40 a night. I couldn't imagine walking to or from the car in the dark.

They kept our deposit, and the service was poor. There was no water in the hall, and the night receptionist was looking at their phone instead of even making eye contact.
