The gentleman at the front desk came up to help us figure out the outlets, and it was easy to get our deposit back. The place has potential, with soft water and a pool, though the ice machine needs some upkeep. In our room, some sheets and towels were stained and the lamp didn't work. Other than that, it was okay.

The $50 charge made no sense, and nobody could explain it. It felt like they were just keeping my deposit. The food was awful, low quality, and not worth the cost. The rooms are old, the service is bad, and there are hidden charges. This hotel chain has very poor standards. I won't stay at Howard Johnson by Wyndham San Marcos again, and I'd strongly advise people to stay away. Very bad quality and very dishonest. I do NOT recommend it.

The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable, and the rooms are new, updated, and super clean. Everyone on staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. The location worked perfectly for us, with attractions and restaurants easy to reach. We had a wonderful stay, would recommend this hotel, and would stay here again.

I booked a NONSMOKING room, and my booking showed it as nonsmoking, but the smell was overwhelming, like someone had smoked 6 packs right before I came in. It soaked into the clothes in my suitcase. There were burn holes in the sheets, what looked like patched bullet holes, and mystery stains on the lounge chair. I only stayed one night out of 3 and am now fighting for a refund because I didn't feel safe or comfortable there. I'm deeply disappointed in the quality and the “hotel's” customer service. Looks and reviews can be very deceiving.

The front desk staff were friendly, and the mattresses were at least comfortable, but they were stained and nasty. I check mattresses wherever I stay, and these seriously need replacing. Breakfast could use more variety. If you're happy with lots of bread and cereal, though, this is your place.
