The lobby was clean, staff at the desk were friendly, and things initially seemed fine. My wife chose this place because it was near Kalahari, so we could add family activities without paying another $600 to swim. We weren’t expecting turn-down service or a mint on the pillow, but the stay was still rough. Getting to our first room meant walking through a haze of marijuana smoke. Its HVAC didn’t work, leaving the room freezing for at least two or three days. The outlet had burn marks on the hot side, the caulking was bad and there was mold, a light lens was broken, and the room smelled musty and dingy. Nearby rooms were loud enough to feel like a Cypress Hill concert. At the desk, staff were friendly, but I found their explanation that they turn the heating units on only after rooms are booked a little hard to believe. They moved us to the other side of the building, but the pot smoke was everywhere despite the waiver threatening fines or removal for smoking inside. The replacement room wasn’t much better, though we accepted it because we just needed a place to crash. Its HVAC worked when we arrived, perhaps because the desk had “activated” it this time. Room 2018 had a huge, unfinished drywall repair on the ceiling. I also saw sprinkler heads without secured escutcheon plates in that room and around the hallways on my way to and from the pool. The Kleenex box was less than half full, so it seemed like it hadn’t been replenished in a while. The linen looked clean but was too thin for my kids, so they used the throw blankets we’d brought. The bath water was extremely hot, at least 120°F by my estimate. I was glad I checked and adjusted it before the kids got in. The TV had little beyond local channels and a lot of home shopping. Wi-Fi didn’t work unless you signed up for some Comfort Inn pass, which was too confusing to bother with. No password was offered at the desk, so we used my mobile hotspot for the kids’ devices. The walls were paper thin, and I could hear four or five teens drinking, smoking, swearing, and running through the halls. The building is old, and staying in places like this doesn’t usually bother me, living near metro Detroit. It was 11:59 p.m., I was the only one awake in my room, and I felt like writing my own review. It’s cheap, but if you don’t want a contact buzz, need working heating and air conditioning, or want more polished, modern amenities, maybe spend the extra $30-50 somewhere else.

The comfortable beds, clean rooms, nicely decorated lobby, and lack of odd smells made for a good stay during the first week of October. The front desk person was pleasant and helpful when we arrived quite late. The pool and hot tub area was really cute, with comfortable furniture and a beach scene painted across the whole space. There’s also a small arcade: a multicade game for 25 cents, one Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga combo, and two claw machines. The hotel is obviously older, and small things like recaulking the tub need attention, but nothing major. Breakfast had several hot options: eggs, sausage patties, breakfast potatoes, and waffles. They ran out about an hour before breakfast ended and took a while to bring more out. There was also cereal, oatmeal, fruit, yogurt cups, toast, coffee, and orange juice, though the yogurt ran out on the second day. I’d suggest bagels with cream cheese and more jelly choices. It was an affordable, decent family option close to Cedar Point.

Water came in through the window when it rained, and one room even had damp sheets. The whole place felt filthy: food was smeared on the bedspread, curtains, and wall, the room smelled wet and moldy, sprinklers hung from the ceiling, and the wall outlets weren't secure. When we tried to tell the front desk, they seemed irritated and weren't polite. This may have been the most disgusting hotel I've ever stayed in. I'd give it zero stars if I could.

The bathroom was a huge letdown for $130 a night, more like a prison shower than what I expected. The hallway smelled sour, almost like cat urine, and the room was around 83 degrees when I arrived because the system was off. It wouldn't start until I went to the desk and the attendant flipped a breaker. Maybe that was because I booked at the last minute, or maybe they don't cool empty rooms, but other hotels I've used at least keep them comfortable for guests. I was in the area for Cedar Point and booked that same night for one night. The lobby was fairly clean and the desk attendant was friendly. Later, my key took about 12 tries to work, and when I tested it again it took even more. The keys were finicky.

The bathroom smelled mildewy, and I could still smell it in the morning. Breakfast was mostly gone and hadn't been replenished, with only orange juice to drink, so we had to go out for food. They put us at the end of the hallway even though they could see my husband walks with a cane. The hot tub felt about 96 degrees and wasn't filled all the way.
