My brother has lived here for two years, and I’ve seen enough to have a lot to say, even though I haven’t lived here myself. His apartment is under 300 square feet and costs over $2,100 a month. The stove was out for more than five months, and waste came back up through the sink for three months before I pushed him to demand a repair. As far as I can tell, Carmen, the manager, doesn’t fix problems. She raises the rent without notice, contrary to what the owner told him when he set the price, and doesn’t want tenants calling the owner. I’ve found her rude and often apparently drunk, and she has called the police over someone objecting to her remarks. The officers seemed to think she was acting irrationally and, according to my brother, have called her a slumlord. She also never cleaned the apartment or replaced towels or toilet paper, so this isn’t a hotel in that sense. The owner needs to pay closer attention. This place could have potential with the right manager, but right now she takes advantage of people and I’d stay away. The day before a hurricane shut everything down, her boyfriend, brother, or whoever he is cut branches from the trees and left them piled in front of my brother’s apartment, where they could blow around.
