Valet was the only pleasant part, and that was as I was leaving. For a Diamond reward member, this was a total bust, and not the kind of service I'd expect from a Hilton. The room was unsatisfactory, the beds uncomfortable, and there was a persistent musty mold smell that flared up my sinuses. Leaving the hotel was the only relief. The ceiling was dripping, and I also saw a roach in the bathroom. The lobby restroom smelled so pungent before I even opened the door; there was feces on the toilet and urine on the floor. The lobby and restrooms were dirty, and the coffee bar seemed like a health hazard. I saw a child lick the coffee stirrers and put them back. Dogs were running and barking in the halls with nobody around. Staff made me feel unwelcome from the start. The front desk manager was no help when I raised concerns and acted like I should thank her for letting me stay. I didn't get a single apology. Nobody seemed to smile. At the rooftop bar, the bartender was rude and seemed more interested in one guest than serving everyone equally. The food was way overpriced even for a Hilton. It felt like a low-budget inn. I wouldn't recommend this place.
We walked around at night and felt safe, though we thought Bay Street was a better choice after dark than River Street. We tried both. The hotel fronts Bay Street and backs onto River Street along the water. From the lower River Street level, you can walk right out near the shops, bars, restaurants, and trolley stop. Another exit brings you onto Bay Street, and buses come around the corner since it's on the east end of the historic area. The rooftop pool was warm like bathwater, which was perfect on a cool day, and there were fire pits. The rooftop bar had live music and happy hour prices. Breakfast was good, but the serving area felt too small for the number of guests. There was also a concierge for tours and things like that. Our departure was interrupted by a fire alarm and fire trucks. The rooms were beautifully updated, with lovely bedding, drapes, and decor. They were larger than I expected for a boutique hotel in a historic building on the Savannah River. Lamps on both sides of the bed had all the charging ports we needed. We were pleased with our night there and would love to return. Covered parking at the ramp next door was $40; valet cost us $50. Their open lot is no longer available. The bellhop said the lot between the hotel and river is going to become two hotels.
The breakfast bar was really good, the pool had plenty of seating, and the hotel was clean with friendly staff. But the bed was hard and lumpy, and the pillows were flat and squishy, so that's why I'm giving it three stars. Save the valet fee, there's a nearby garage that's cheaper.
The pool was beautiful and relaxing, and the drinks were delicious. We ate at the rtb, but the food was just so-so. It was our first visit, and I loved the room. It was beautiful, with very comfortable beds, and our balcony looked out from a corner view where we saw a few ships go by.
The one thing that bothered me, which hotel management can't fix, was the awful smell from the Paper Mill. It has been shoutdown, but the STRONG odor still hangs around. My February 9-13 stay worked well because I could walk to the places I needed to be, and they weren't far away. Staff across the property were courteous and professional, from the front desk and dining team to engineering and valet. I'll stay here again in Savannah, GA (Port City), whether I'm back for work or pleasure.
