Residence Inn by Marriott Savannah Midtown

The place is decent, but parking may be tight, especially over the holidays or during other busy periods. Check that your door locks properly. I only discovered my locks weren’t working after the first night. They moved me when I reported it, but by then I was already pretty rattled.

The front desk receptionists were both very nice, and check-in went smoothly. That was the good part. My room had a hole in the wall by the closet near the living room, the shower water never got hot, and the beds were very hard. The pool water was so foggy that it needs cleaning. I paid for late checkout through the Marriott Bonvoy app, but they kept rushing me out an hour before my paid extension. Traffic noise from the main road next to my room kept me awake all night.

The shower had hairs in it, and the place was so rundown I didn’t even want to shower. My husband did and said it was nasty. We washed everything we’d brought, even the things we hadn’t worn, as soon as we got home. This was the worst Marriott I’ve stayed at, just disgusting. There were holes and crumbling walls, TVs that didn’t work, and the underside of the pullout sofa was dark brown. The elevator had literal foil holding things together, and the staff didn’t look clean or put together. There’s no way it deserves the four stars shown on the site. We were in town for a gymnastics competition, and others who booked there had the same experience. Go anywhere else.

The room had a spacious kitchen, was clean, included a real fireplace, and was mostly comfortable, a bit like an AirBnB. That fireplace was unique and slightly scary all at once. The location worked great for the event I was attending, and there aren’t many AirBnB options within a good driving distance of the venue. Breakfast was simple, a little more than continental: both mornings had one meat option, scrambled eggs, waffles, and the usual continental items. There were three of us, and although we didn’t raise it with staff, the advertised two-bedroom suite was supposed to have one king bed and two queens, but each room only had one standard-size bed. We made do with the pullout couch, but its mattress was paper thin and, in my opinion, not suitable for an adult. The bedding didn’t include a fitted sheet. I chose to sleep on the couch instead of using the pullout bed. At about 5:30 p.m. when I checked in, the place looked closed. The front desk lights were low, and I had to ring the bell before someone came over. Check-in was quick, but I had to ask about parking and the elevator, couldn’t find a luggage cart, and later called to get help with Wi-Fi login. On checkout day, a housekeeper knocked around 9:45 a.m. and then used her master key to come in while we were getting dressed. I’d put the “Not now” magnet on the door to show we didn’t want to be disturbed. When someone from our room met her at the door, she asked when we were leaving as if we were already late. I found that inconsiderate.
